I have read a lot of books on Calculus but “Calculus Made Easy<\/strong>” by Silvanus P. Thompson<\/strong> stands out as possibly the easiest book to read on this topic. It totally lives up to its name. The first chapter opens up with an impressive introduction on the difference between dx<\/em> &\u00a0\u222b.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

d which merely means \u201ca little bit of.\u201d
\nThus dx means a little bit of x; or du means a little bit of u.<\/p>\n

\u222b\u00a0<\/em>which is merely a long S, and may be called (if you like) \u201cthe sum of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thus\u222b<\/em>dx means the sum of all the little bits of x; or dt means the sum of all the little bits of t.<\/p>\n
